Move items to a hidden album

When you move a photo that's been backed up to a private or hidden album in your device’s default gallery app app, it deletes all the copies on your phone. It also tries to remove the cloud copy on Google Photos.

Manage album data

Back up your album metadata

Important:

  • To back up your album data from your device’s default gallery app, Google Photos backup needs to be turned on. Learn more about backup.
  • Currently, backing up album data on Google Photos is only available on Vivo devices.

If you allow your device’s default gallery app to access Google Photos, your album data is backed up to Google Photos. Your device maker can only back up folder information for files that have been backed up by Google Photos. The albums from your device’s default gallery app won't show up in Google Photos, but you can:

  • Sync your albums on other devices made by the same company.
  • Restore albums in your device's default gallery app.

If you have devices from different companies, Google Photos stores the album data separately for each company.

Tip: If your albums don’t sync properly across devices with the same manufacturer, contact your device manufacturer.

Delete your album metadata

You can delete the data for each device manufacturer separately. This won’t impact your photos or videos.

  1. On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
  2. At the top, click Settings .
  3. Next to "Delete default gallery album data," click Expand Down arrow.
  4. Next to the default gallery app’s name, click Delete album data and then Delete data.

Keep your device activity going

If you don't use any devices from the same company for 6 months, your album data might be deleted from Google Photos. Before that happens, you’ll get:

  • An email notification.
    • You’ll be notified one month before your album data is eligible for deletion.
  • A chance to stop your album data from being deleted.
    • To stop this, you need to use the device with the same default gallery app.
  • To download your content from Google services.

Tip: If your album data is deleted, it won’t affect your photos or videos.
