Set up and use the Google Home app

  • Set up Google devices including:

Navigate the Google Home app

The Google Home app is divided into several sections to help you easily find what you need.

Customize and manage the Favorites tab
You can add or remove actions, automations, and devices to the Favorites tab for quick and easy access.

Favorites tiles can let you:

  • Check the status of a device or automation.
  • Touch and hold to open all device or automation settings.
  • Quickly access basic controls:
    • Tap to turn a device on or off.
    • Tap to start an action or automation.
    • Use a slider to adjust brightness or media volume.

Customize Favorites

  • To change the actions, automations, or devices on your Favorites, scroll down and tap Edit . Check or uncheck the box next to the tile to add or remove it from Favorites.
  • To organize your Favorites, tap Reorder to drag the tiles into the position you want.

When you add or edit your favorites in the mobile Google Home app, they’ll automatically sync on other devices. If desired, you can create a set of favorites specific to your Pixel Tablet and supported smartwatches.

For your Pixel Tablet

  1. On your Pixel Tablet’s home panel, tap Edit .
    • Alternatively, open your Google Home app and tap Favorites.
  2. A popup message “Edit unique favorites on Pixel Tablet” will appear:
    • Tap Edit to create unique favorites for your Pixel Tablet.
    • Tap No thanks to return to using the Google Home app synced favorites.
  3. Check or uncheck the box next to each tile to add or remove it from Favorites.
  4. Tap Save.

A notification will confirm you saved the changes.

For supported watches

  1. On your watch’s “Favorites” tile, scroll down and tap Edit favorites.
  2. Tap Open on phone which will open the Google Home app on your connected phone.
  3. Add or remove tiles to customize your favorites.
  4. Tap Next.
  5. Rearrange your favorites on this screen.
  6. Tap Save.

A message will confirm you saved the changes.

Other key features in Favorites

  • Home selector: Displays the name of your home at the top. If you have multiple homes set up, tap your home name to switch between homes.
  • Inbox: Shows important notifications about your home. This includes device issues, suggested automations, invitations to join a home, and more.
  • Device categories: These appear at the top.
    • Cameras: Shows your camera’s video. Multiple compatible cameras are displayed together.
    • Lighting: Control all the compatible lights in your home or in a specific room.
    • Wi-Fi: Runs speed tests and manages your Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi, or Google Wifi network and settings.
    • Climate: Displays your thermostat and temperature sensors in one place.
  • Media mini-player: Shows what media you're currently playing and which device it's on.
Monitor and control the Devices tab
In the Devices tab, you can check all the devices that you've added to your home. They’re organized by the room that they're assigned to.

Device controls

Touch and hold your device's tile to open all of its settings or controls. Different types of devices have different controls. Some device tiles show the device status or certain controls.

  • Google Nest and Home speakers and displays:
    • Control the speaker or display’s volume and equalization (EQ).
    • Play, pause, skip, or stop media.
    • Access settings.
  • Google streaming devices:
    • Control the display’s volume or access settings.
    • Play, pause, skip, or stop media.
  • Pixel Tablet (Hub Mode only): Control the Charging Speaker Dock's volume and stop casting.
  • Cameras: Check the live video stream from your compatible cameras. Newer cameras also let you change settings and check history.
  • Thermostat: Adjust your compatible thermostat's set point, change modes, and check the ambient temperature. Other settings might be available for some thermostat models.
  • Lights: Turn your compatible smart lights on and off and adjust their brightness or color, if supported.
  • Smart plugs: Turn your compatible smart plug on and off.
  • Speaker Groups: Access the group's settings.
Create and manage Automations
In the Automations tab, you can manage Routines to automate your home and help with daily tasks.
Important: All household members can check when these Routines run. Routines are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical use cases. Don't create Routines that could result in injury or harm if they fail to start or stop. Routines can depend on working internet, Wi-Fi, and service availability from both Google and the third parties who manufacture the devices included in Routines. Routines may not always work, and Google isn't responsible for any harm or losses incurred due to failed Routines.
Access your Activity
In the Activity tab, you can find your home's history, which includes events captured by cameras, interactions with Google Assistant, device states, and more.

If you want to check specific types of activity, tap Filter to select what you want to appear. Pick from any combination of events and devices to find what's most important to you. Select the filters you want to use and tap Save.

Manage your Settings
In the Settings tab, some of the things that you can do include:
  • Check your home and members’ information.
  • Add devices.
  • Create new speaker groups.
  • Check the services that are enabled.
Add and manage accounts in the Account menu
  1. In the top right of any of the main app screens, tap Account Account icon.
  2. Tap the dropdown to open the menu.

From the menu, you can add and manage accounts, visit the Google Help Center, and submit feedback.
